Artist Statement

I began my journey with a paintbrush at the age of 56. Until that point in time, my life was occupied with practicing family medicine in Lynn, Massachusetts. One day I suddenly had the urge to explore my creative side.

From the moment that I first applied paint to canvas, I was captivated. While I took a few lessons from local artists, I primarily taught myself through reading instructional books and experimenting.  I draw my inspiration from the human face and figure and I paint in a realistic or semi-realistic style. Musicians are represented in works such as "Make a Joyful Noise" and "Bourbon Street Blues," the dreams of a beautiful woman are represented in "Dreaming of David," and the flirtatious spirit is portrayed in "Cosmo Girl."I enjoy the texture of oil based paint which I use almost exclusively.

Over the last five years, I have shifted my focus and dedicated more time to sculpting. I currently enjoy sculpting under the guidance of my mentor Ms Nancy Hart along with a remarkable group of talented artists in Venice, Florida. I work in mostly ceramic clay but occasionally use polymer or even air-dry clay. The ceramic pieces once fired are either glazed or painted.

Some of my sculptures include busts of famous icons, such as Winston Churchill, Abe Lincoln, and Queen Nefertiti. I have also sculpted figures and planters in the shape of a head (my pot heads). My work has been displayed and won several awards at the Marblehead Festival of Arts as well as the Salem Arts Association. I am a member of the New England Sculptors Association.

I am very excited to showcase my art at the Jolie Tea Company Café. The theme for this exhibit is Feminine Mystique.
